NHRC pulls up Karnataka on human rights cases
Rights panel chief: All states have filed action taken report except Karnataka.
Bengaluru: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed displeasure over Karnataka not filing the action taken report regarding violation of human rights related cases. NHRC Chairman Justice H.L. Dattu took up a marathon hearing of cases pending before the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) here on Thursday. All states have filed action taken reports regarding violation of human rights cases, but Karnataka has not adhered to the instructions of NHRC since two years, Justice Dattu stated.
To protect, women and children, senior citizen and labour rights, the NHRC had conducted a national level workshop in 2016 and had then suggested that all states file the action taken report. Justice Dattu instructed the state to file the ATR immediately. To dispose pending cases, NHRC has taken initiative by conducting public hearings. In many states, public hearings have been conducted and pending cases disposed off, he said.
NHRC is committed to safeguard women rights, and will take stringent action against the official concerned if violation of women rights cases are found. The NHRC has also prevailed upon both the state and Centre regarding up-gradation of infrastructure in primary educational institutions, hospitals, prisons and primary health centres across the country, Justice Dattu explained. He also conducted hearing of cases pertaining to education and land acquisition cases.
