CCTV surveillance coverage at all suburban railway stations in Chennai remains only on paper.

Visakhapatnam: With the police outpost plan for IT SEZ in Rushikonda inordinately delayed, the initiative to install CCTV cameras at major locations on the IT hills could instil a safe feeling among IT employees, especially women.

In a bid to ensure security in the area, the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastr-ucture Corporation (APIIC) is installing 360-degree IP cameras at 14 major points with the main servers stationed on Hill Nos. 1 and 3.

A check post manned by two security guards has been set up for the IT SEZ area and police patrolling has begun, but that is by no means adequate, since it has to cover not only IT employees but thousands of tourists visiting the beaches in the area.

The city police plans to set up Vizag Security Council (VSC) along the lines of the Society of Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC) to deal with the security aspects of IT companies and commercial establishments. A few other organisations and institutions in Vizag have also not taken shape.

The cameras are on the verge of installation. The APIIC officials had held a meeting with the police and IT companies to identify a suitable location for the cameras. The city police has suggested 14 locations, from where almost all the routes could be monitored.

PM Palem circle inspe-ctor Ch. Lakshmana Murthy said the CCTV surveillance project would help to beef up security in the area with monitoring getting easier. This could also help keep tabs on groups of youngsters indulging in mischievous activities.
