Rise in cases of children deserting parents in Vijayawada

164 cases were reported to the tribunal in the district out of which 98 cases were reported from Vijayawada alone.

Vijayawada: Incidents of children deserting their aged parents are on rise in Krishna district and in Vijayawada in particular. Officials in differently abled and senior citizens welfare department say that disputes over property and assets sharing are more alarming between parents and children.

As many as 164 cases were reported to the tribunal in the district out of which 98 cases were reported from Vijayawada alone. In all, 37 cases in Nuzvid, 7 cases in Machilipatnam and five cases reported in Gudivada during the last one year.

Assistant director of department of differently abled and senior citizens, A.V.D. Narayana Rao said that many people do not know that there exists a law which protects the rights of senior citizens and a tribunal at each revenue division which addresses the issues relating to senior citizens. “Many cases are going unreported and only those who are having some knowledge are coming to us,” he said.

Mr Rao also said that after the capital announcement, asset sharing disputes have increased in Vijayawada region. He said with land value increasing manifold in the last two years, people have become greedy for money and neglecting their parents. He also observed that this types of cases are being reported from where the parents have properties and children fail to settle in a profession.

In Vijayawada, a 70-year-old widow having a daughter and a son is now fighting in the tribunal for her daily bread. She had given properties worth Rs 40 crore to her children but both of them have deserted her. In another case, a retired government employee is fighting with his son for medical expenses for his wife. His son is a doctor but he argues that his father is still earning well.
