One killed in train derailment in Ambattur

On impact, the container tipped over and fell on a man near the weighbridge and crushed to death.

Chennai: In two separate incidents, trains derailed in Egmore and Ambattur on Tuesday, with one person getting crushed to death when a container fell on him.

The accident happened around 9:15 am when a goods train containing blue metal stones “rolled back” at Ambattur railway station, leading to the derailment and hit a container.

On impact, the container tipped over and fell on a man near the weighbridge and crushed to death. The man has been identified as Mani (76) of Indira Gandhi Nagar.

The railway police said there was a total of 14 wagons in the goods train. The wagons were kept at a bay at the station as workers were loading the blue metal stones on to it. However, the wagons were not attached to an engine and started rolling backwards. The guard cabin of the wagon hit an electronic weighbridge and a container. The container then fell on Mani who was sitting near the weighbridge and crushed him to death.

In a separate incident at Egmore, an empty coach of the Uzhavan Express train that travels from Tanjore to Chennai proceeding to the yard derailed. “The empty rake hit another engine and in the collision, the eighth and ninth coach of the train derailed.

Railway police said nobody was injured however five inbound trains suffered delay for an hour.
