Update: 2023-10-03 18:30 GMT

HYDERABAD: A division bench of the Telangana High Court comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice N.V. Shravan Kumar on Tuesday directed the government to state by which date it would appoint the chairperson and members to the TS Human Rights Commission (TSHRC).

The court asked where the people should go if their human rights were being violated as the TSHRC has been dysfunctional since December 22, 2022.

The government communicated to the court that the appointment process was underway. Harender Pershad, special government counsel submitted that the government had commenced the process of appointments.

It had received four applications for the post of chairperson, 10 and 64 respectively for the post of members, judicial and non-judicial.

These applications have to be screened by a committee comprising the Chief Minister, Assembly Speaker, leader of the Opposition, and the ministers of the cooperation and home. Pershad sought four weeks.

Zeeshan Mohammed, counsel for the petitioner, who questioned the inordinate delay in making the appointments, opposed the request. Counsel said that the government would return in four weeks and say that the election code had come into vogue. The court granted the government time up to October 16.
