Hyderabad: Medical and health minister C. Laxma Reddy on Thursday told the Assembly that the government intended to enact a law to regulate surrogacy.

He said the state had 76 fertility centres, nearly half of which were located in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts. These centres were permitted by previous governments; the TRS government had not permitted a single centre since 2014.

He said the government had received several complaints that fertility centres were to illegal surrogacy and the medical department has been conducting raids on such centres. He said the government has constituted a committee headed by retired High Court judge Justice Gopal Reddy to regulate surrogacy till the new Act is enacted.

He added that the government will take inputs from the Surrogacy Bill introduced in Lok Sabha in 2016 while bringing its own Act.

Congress members G Chinna Reddy, J Geeta Reddy and N. Padmavati Reddy expressed concern over the infertility centres allegedly running illegally in Hyderabad.
