Muttathara complex to have aerobic bins
The land identified is a 40 m long and 16 m wide piece.
Thiruvananthapuram: The fishers’ housing complex at Muttathara, which has little land available for composting, presents a typical urban waste management problem to the corporation. The civic body, it is learnt, has risen to the challenge. Corporation officials have identified space to set up aerobic bins on this complex where buildings occupy most of the land and the remaining strips have either interlocked tiles or are tarred.
The land identified is a 40 m long and 16 m wide piece. They are confident that this should be adequate to deal with waste from 192 households. Now, they await further instructions from the corporation.
There are portable bins at Valiathura market. Since an aerobic bin shelter has been set up here, the portable bins can be moved to a new space. It is likely that these will be shifted to the housing complex.
The Fisheries Depart-ment had submitted a letter requesting the corporation to do the needful. Once the cor-poration responds with an appropriate suggestion, an agreement will be executed. This will happen at the earliest, said an official at Fisheries Department. “The families are expected to start living some time next week. Some paper work related to water connection is being completed. This will be over by Monday. By that time, there will be provisions to take care of food waste,” they said.
There are 192 apartments in the complex. There is practically no land for composting. The problem should sound familiar to many staying in apartments. That’s the reason why, its solution is going to serve as an example for other apartment dwellers in the city.
