Hyderabad: On Saturday morning, residents of Sainikpuri were armed to the teeth with shovels, spades and baskets, to name just a few implements. Their objective was to clear out the makeshift garbage dumps in and around Sainik-puri’s Defence Colony.

In the first-ever shramdaan in Sainikpuri, residents cleared out heaps of garbage lying in open plots and, to their surprise, learnt that most of the waste originated from construction sites.

"Sainikpuri is riddled with a lot of open spaces and instead of using them as parks or gardens, they were turned into makeshift dumps. While construction debris took away the lion’s share of the waste, the remaining was waste from hotels and garbage from other colonies," said Deepa Shailender, a resident of Sainikpuri.

That’s not all, the residents had also roped in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), whose officials joined the fray with an earth-mover.

After cleaning out the waste, residents are now contemplating ways to prevent these open parcels of land from turning into dump yards once again.

"We are now speaking with architects and interior designers who can come up with something new to avert people from using these open spots as dumps," she added.
