PERAMBALUR: People of several areas including Krishnapuram, Thazuthalai, Ayerpalayam, Arumbavur and its surrounding areas in Perambalur district are suffering, as the flood water entered their residential localities on Monday.

Though there was no rain in most parts of Perambalur district for the last two days , rainwater came gushing down from the Pachamalai hills, thanks to the heavy rain in the wee hours, located on the borders of Tiruchy and Perambalur districts.

This resulted in the Kallaru river in Perambalur district receiving heavy inflows. The river  overflowed its banks and the waters entered nearby villages affecting the people of that area.

Excess rain waters also entered the Government hospital at Krishnapuram, panicking the in-patients. On information, the fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot and removed all the in-patients to Government headquarters hospital Perambalur, official sources told DC.

The hospital was temporarily shifted to the community centre at Krishnapuram where out-patients are being treated, the sources said. However, water began to recede later in the day.

Due to continuous and heavy rains, the ‘samba’ paddy crop in about  40,000 acres were submerged across Nagapattinam district, including in Panagkudi, Thiruchangattagkudi, Perumkadambanur, Thirumarugal, Veilankanni, Keezaiyur, Keezhvelur, Thalagnayiru, Vedaranyam, Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthurai areas.

Most of the farmers urged the government to assess the details of damaged ‘samba’ paddy crop and to sanction adequate compensation for them.

A 70-year-old man of Kangeyanagar near Valankaiman in Tiruvarur district was feared to have been washed away by the flood waters of Sullan river of that area.
