Vijayawada: Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao on Tuesday said that the Congress has failed to take up Polavaram project during its 10 years rule. Reacting to the letter written by Rajya Sabha member K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao to the Chief Minister demanding release of white paper on Polavaram project, the minister said that the TD government was committed to completing the project by 2018.

He said that the state government spent Rs 21,000 crore on irrigation projects and Rs 3,247.27 crore on Polavaram project during the past 2.5 years. The minister said that the Congress and YSR Congress leaders were trying to stall the progress of project works by creating hurdles by filing petitions in national green tribunal. Mr Uma Maheswara Rao said that the Congress government had failed to take up rehabilitation during its rule while the TD government was going to spend Rs 28,000 crore on rehabilitation of tribals in Polavaram submerged areas. The minister said that the state government will release water to Pulivendula on January 11.

He said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu proved his commitment by completing the Pattiseema lift irrigation in record time. Likewise, the state government is committed to completing the Polavaram project as per schedule. He said that Mr Ramachandra Rao has no moral right to criticise Mr Naidu on Polavaram project.
