NIZAMABAD: The workers of Nizam Deccan Sugars Limited (NDSL) blocked TRS MP K. Kavitha’s convoy at Shakkarnagar Crossroads in Bodhan on Wednesday, demanding that the lay-off at the factory be lifted. Some workers lay down on the road blocking the MP’s vehicle.

The workers raised slogans against the state government, accusing it of ignoring its promise to run the NDSL as a public sector undertaking. The police arrived at the spot and took the workers into custody.

MP Kavitha, who was at Shakkarnagar to inaugurate a statue of Babu Jagjivan Ram, a crusader against caste discrimination, said that two committees, comprising officials and ministers, would be constituted to study the situation at NDSL.

"Sugarcane farmers and workers need not worry about the future of the factory as the government will take a salutary decision regarding this," she said.

She urged the management to clear workers' wages soon. Bodhan MLA Shakeel and other TRS leaders were also present.
