Chennai: Teacher beats up 6-year-old, expelled
She was punished as warning to others.
CHENNAI: A girl aged six studying in a kindergarten school was allegedly caned by her class teacher on Wednesday.
The teacher concerned who was threatened by the parents for her behaviour was expelled from school after the issue was brought to the knowledge of the management. A complaint had been lodged with RK Nagar police which has jurisdiction over Seet hakathi Matriculation Higher Secondary School.
The child is the eldest daughter of a tailor of Tondiarpet. On Wednesday evening, the child’s mother who usually collects her from school, was surprised to find her daughter missing after school hours. When the mother checked, the girl informed that the teacher had beaten her with a stick for not writing properly.
The parents took the child to a doctor for first aid and later went to RK Nagar police where they preferred a complaint. When DC contacted the school management, it was learnt the teacher herself had disclosed the matter to the school management after the parents’ objections.
“We called the teacher for inquiry and she admitted caning the child. We have never encouraged teachers to resort to corporal punishment. However, they keep doing it. We faced a similar problem earlier too. That time we expelled the teacher to make it serve as a warning to other teachers”, said a member of the school management.
“We have taken this teacher as well out of school”, the source said.
Another source in the school said the parents themselves had told the teacher to punish the girl to make her study well. However, the parents were worried on seeing the child cry.
