Hyderabad Contract staffer falls to death
GHMC unions said a new transformer was installed recently in the area and it was not communicated to the GHMC.
Hyderabad: A GHMC contract employee who was repairing a faulty streetlight suffered an electric shock, fell down from the pole and died on Thursday in Mettuguda.
The victim, Raju, climbed the pole thinking the supply was off. Raju started work without taking safety measures, officials said. Employee unions said lack of coordination between the GHMC and the electricity department led to the incident.
A Raju, 28, belonging to Warangal, was working with the GHMC electrical wing since 10 years. On Thursday he was assigned the job of repairing streetlights near the Ayyappa temple at Mettuguda. Around 12.30 pm Raju and his team started work. While the lineman went to switch off power Raju climbed the pole.
“Even before the lineman switched off the supply Raju started work thinking the supply was off,” said Chilkalguda inspector V. Srinivasulu.
Officials from the electricity department said that it was his hurry that led to the incident and there was no negligence on the part of the department. Deputy executive engineer K. Maheshwar, said that as per procedure, one should get clearance from ground staff.
GHMC unions said a new transformer was installed recently in the area and it was not communicated to the GHMC. “Due to this the lineman could not off the correct line,” said CITU Secunderabad zonal secretary M. Ajay Babu.
