Hyderabad: The GHMC is roping in registered resident welfare associations in its latest attempt to evolve a new system to number houses. The project does not find place in the 100-day action plan of the corporation.

In April 2015, the GHMC had entered into an agreement with a city-based startup to simplify the numbering by generating alphanumeric house codes (like TSHS1111)  from the traditional, if confusing numbers like 7-13/H-143 exist.

Under a pilot project, the startup issued 14,000 address codes in Srinagar Colony and Kondapur. But this exercise, which was allocated '5 crore, attracted criticism from residents and the postal department officials.

It was said that the house numbers as they stand now gave more details than the alphanumeric codes. The new system would lead to confusion and delay in delivery of mail, the postal department contended. The posts department depends on pin codes and door numbers, and no official notification was sent to it on smart numbering.

Regarding the latest attempt to reorganise house numbers, Venkatapuram Nagar secretary L. Prasad said, “We had earlier approached the GHMC to carry out a joint initiative. All that the GHMC needs is the data of houses. As a registered body we can collect the data and submit it for verification to the GHMC.”
An officer from the corporation’s urban planning said, “Once it is authorised the GHMC will erect boards in the area with the numbers. After the RWAs submit the data, the GHMC wing cross-check the numbers. After authentication, boards will be erected indicating the new system.
