KOZHIKODE: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy received an extraordinary request from a first standard student at a function held here on Thursday to inaugurate the construction work of  a new building for Malabar’s century-old  government teachers’ training institute.

The  tiny tot,  Shivani, a class-one student  managed to get his attention and asked him to construct a house for her  classmate Amal Krishna who does not have a house.  Mr Chandy immediately agreed and in his speech expressed his  excitement of listening to her  plea  for a safe abode for her classmate. The Chief Minister also  released the master plan for the  institution, the first one in Malabar.

The  institution that was running so far in a dilapidated building on the 2.5 acres of  land given  by  the Zamorins  will get a three- storey building resembling the old palaces of Kerala with modern  infrastructure. “We have been seeking the development of  the institution  and finally it is  getting ready,”  said Ms T.C. Rosemary, principal. The new centre  will have advanced facilities, including subject-wise labs.
