Kozhikode: ABC street dog survey kicks off

Initiative is part of animal birth control.

Corporation mayor says the construction of the ABC hospital for street dogs is at the final stage.

KOZHIKODE: The city corporation launched the Jeevanam Athijeevanam programme as part of animal birth control (ABC) programme on Saturday to survey street dogs. The process will continue until March 10 with the help of social service organisations, residents' associations and the Kudumbashree. Also, the corporation is conducting health camps for pet dogs and awareness programme for the public, especially children, to deal with dogs, besides seminars.

"The construction of the ABC hospital for street dogs is at the final stage, and very soon we will be opening it," said mayor Thottathil Raveendran.  "The survey and other programmes form the curtain raiser before the hospital launch. Indian Veterinary Association, Rotary Club of Calicut, Pookode Veterinary College and animal husbandry department are also associating with us."   

More than 50 NSS volunteers and teachers will be helping the survey.  "Each team will have three members. We are also asking the public to report to our office if they face stray menace to ensure that we cover every nook and corner of the city," he said. Local administrative minister K.T. Jaleel inaugurated the programme.
