Missing icons of Big temple in Thanjavur: Probe begins
The icons-both believed to be worth Rs 100 crore might have been stolen from the temple some 50 years back
Thanjavur: The police have started investigation to locate the missing icons of Raja Raja Cholan and his wife Lokamadevi, from the Big temple here about 50 years back, after registering a case in the Thanjavur west police station on Friday.
The icons-both believed to be worth Rs 100 crore might have been stolen from the temple some 50 years back, police said, adding, “as we have information that they have not been moved out of the country we are sure of locating them in other states within the country.”
As part of the investigation, the police made enquiries with historians, epigraphists and archaeologists of the town (Thanjavur) and got information on Saturday. “We are making enquiries. We will let you know when there is a development” T. Senthil Kumar, Thanjavur SP, told DC on Saturday.
Incidentally, several icons missing from Big temple have come to light, as much as some have been found now.
