NITI Aayog's one poll' letter in limbo
Modi has been pitching for holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, arguably to cut down on massive government expenditure.
Bengaluru: The State government has not yet responded to the Centre’s proposal of “one nation, one election” theory and to consider deferring the Assembly elections, which are scheduled in May this year.
Top sources in the government said that the letter from the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) was sent to the State government a couple of weeks ago. They in turn marked the letter to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. It was sent back to the government with the remarks that it was a serious matter pertaining to policy decisions and beyond the jurisdiction of the chief electoral officer.
“The government is yet to reply to the Centre,” highly placed sources told this newspaper, who added that the Congress-led Siddaramaiah government may not agree to the NITI Aayog’s proposal of “one nation, one election” theory.
