Hyderabad: 17-year-old dies as tree falls on bike
The police said that the two were not wearing helmets and Umed sustained severe head injuries.
Hyderabad: A 17-year-old PU student died on the spot, while another was injured after a tree accidentally fell on their bike on Ring Road in Kumaraswamy Layout police limits on Saturday night.
The deceased, Umed Pasha, was a resident of Ilyas Nagar. Mohammed Sahir, 17, has sustained injuries and is being treated at a private hospital. The two first PU students were from different colleges and were neighbours.
Umed was riding the bike, while Sahir was on the pillion. They had gone out and were returning home when the accident occurred around 9.45 pm near Kadarenahalli. The police said that the two were not wearing helmets and Umed sustained severe head injuries.
The police and BBMP officials rushed to the spot and cleared the tree.
On Sunday morning, Mayor Gangambike visited the spot and consoled Umed's family members. She announced an ex-gratia of the Rs 10 lakh for the family.
She clarified to Deccan Chronicle that the death was not due to the negligence of BBMP. "I inspected the spot and found that the tree is healthy from outside. It has not fallen due to any external factors like heavy wind or rain. Termites have turned the tree hollow."
She said that BBMP is routinely inspecting trees in the city and is removing those that are not in good condition.
