Telangana beverages firm sells Rs 178 crore liquor in just 1 day

Hyderabad: Telangana State Beverages Corporation saw record sales of Rs 178 crore in a single day on Saturday April 29 surpassing its previous record of Rs 135 crore.
The beverage that sold the most was beer, demand for which rises during the summer months while other alcoholic beverages generally record lesser sales.
Revenue from the excise department has become the backbone for Telangana’s overall revenue, and the revenue earned through keeps rising with each year.
Meanwhile, D Venkateswar Rao, Telangana Wine Dealers Association general secretary, clarified that the Rs 178 crore recorded was that of the state government to wine dealers and not to the public.
Speaking to this newspaper, he said that April 29 was Sunday and May 1 was a holiday, due to which wine dealers across the state purchased liquor worth Rs 178 crore from the Beverages Corporation on April 29.
He added that dealers bought more beer as a precautionary measure as generally in summer demand for beer is high.
Somesh Kumar, principal secretary for revenue (excise and commercial taxes) department, said that the previous high recorded by the Telangana State Beverages Corporation was Rs 135 crore in the previous excise year.
He expressed hope that the excise department will reach its revenue target fixed by the state government for the current financial year.
