Bengaluru: Angala Getting children to play traditional games

These games require both mental and the physical faculties to play them.

Bengaluru: The BBMP on Monday organised ‘Angala’, a programme to introduce city children to traditional games like kabaddi, chinni dandu, buguri (spinning the top), goli (marbles), kunte bille (hop scotch), choor chendu and hagga jaggata (tug of war).

Over 100 students from government and private schools participated and competed. “The idea is to teach our children rural games to improve their overall fitness. These games require both mental and the physical faculties to play them. I feel with this introduction, the students will play the games more often,” said Yediyur corporator Poornima Ramesh.

“I am enjoying these games. They are fun,” said Sushma, a student. “Traditional games improve concentration, stamina and strength of children. Today’s Angala programme was important and these games should be popularised as they do not need many equipment,” said Sandhya, a school teacher.
