Ash sediments in Kosathalayar river: Report

Advocate Lakshmi Narasimhan was appointed to monitor the cleaning procedure in the creek.

Chennai: The advocate commissioner formed by the southern bench of the National Green Tribunal last month, in connection with the fly ash deposition at Ennore Creek,  submitted the report on Thursday.

Advocate Lakshmi Narasimhan was appointed to monitor the cleaning procedure in the creek, which has fallen prey to the exploitation of Tangedco units. 

The report, submitted before the bench comprising Justice P Jyotimani and expert member P S Rao and accessed by DC, stated that the advocate has inspected four sites - Northwestern part of North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS) Stage-1 and Stage-2; ash slurry near NCTPS and Buckingham canal and Paraval area. 

The advocate commissioner clearly stated that lukewarm water and greeneries were found around the Ennore creek and the bank of the cooling water channel.“Ash sediments were found in the Kosasthalaiyar river. Water was available only to the depth of about half feet to 4 feet,” the report said. The report said that Paraval area, situated after the Buckingham canal and Kosasthalaiyur river,  has no mangroves.
