Hyderabad: Baby's death sparks protests at Koti maternity hospital
Medical negligence by doctors and the time spent on taking the baby from one hospital to another proved fatal, allege relatives.
Hyderabad: On Thursday morning, Saritha, a 23-year-old woman from the state, gave birth to a baby at the Government Maternity Hospital in Koti. The doctors on call found an anomaly in the child and redirected the mother and child to Niloufer Hospital where the child passed away.
Saritha’s relatives say that she had severe pain from Monday but they did not let her deliver by saying that it should be a normal delivery. They pleaded with the doctors for an operation but no heed was paid. Her delivery was at 02:30 am and the doctors at Niloufer said that if the delivery was done on Monday, the baby would have survived.
A senior doctor at the hospital said, “We have over 13,000 deliveries in the state and we cannot expect all the babies to survive. There was no delay in addressing the situation by the doctors. The mother's health was perfectly fine and the delivery was normal. Some anomalies cannot be detected in ultra sounds and that cannot be put down as medical negligence. We understand the parents’ plight and therefore requested them to please listen to the doctors calmly but it was a charged atmosphere.”
She further stated that eventually the parents heard the doctors out and left the hospital premises to arrange the funeral service for the baby.
