Kochi: Even as the Kerala Medical College Managements Association (KMCMA) mulls moving the Supreme Court on the conduct of spot admission by the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE) by taking over 150 NRI MBBS and turning them into general seats, the meeting called by it in Kochi on Sunday was called off in the last minute.

The meeting was called at a private hotel to chalk out the strategy of the association vis-a-vis the government act of taking over NRI seats and other issues in the medical admission. But it did not take place after KSU activists staged a protest march to the venue and even hurled rotten eggs there. Police intervened to remove the handful of activists.

The DM WIMS Medial College on Sunday declared in a statement that it will not proceed with legal steps on the issue of the state government taking over the NRI medical seats despite substantial financial loss to the management. DM WIMS had lost 23 NRI seats in this. The other managements did not reveal their mind.

Meanwhile the CEE completed the first phase of the spot admission to the BDS seats on September 3. The CEE in a release said that all merit/minority quota seats in government, government-controlled self-financing, private dental seats have been filled now.

A total of 26 NRI BDS seats in Pariyaram dental college, Kannur, Azeeziya, Kollam, Sree Sankara, Varkala and Pushpagiri dental colleges are now remaining vacant.

“Another spot admission will be held on September 8 at 10 am at the CEE’s office on Housing Board building at Santhi Nagar in Thiruvananthapuram. In the absence of NRI category list candidates, those having NRI qualifications will be considered. If qualified candidates do not turn up, such seats will be turned into merit seats and allotment done. Those who have already secured admission to MBBS/BDS seats will not be considered for this spot admission,” the CEE said.
