Chennai: Vinayaka idols leave devotees elated

The Ganesh Chathurthi festival is an occasion for the people to display their cordiality with others and harmony with nature.

Chennai: Thousands flocked to places where huge and impressive Vinayaka idols made of different kinds of materials like conch shells and Rudhrakashas were put up in Chennai on the Ganesh Chaturthi and the attractions seemed to galore.

Devotees put up a huge Athi Varadar Vinayakar, inspired by Lord Athi Varadar, in sayana kolam (reclining posture) at Purasawakkam, made out of black sesame seeds entirely. The idol will be in reclining posture for three days and thereafter shifted to standing posture to grace the devotees in the nindra kolam.

Another huge idol made of 7,001 conch shells at Kolathur that has been placed on Monday, by the Vinayaka Chaturthi festival organising committee, will not be immersed during he Visarjan ceremony, like several thousands of clay idols. Instead, the shells would later be distributed to the devotees at the time of visarjan ceremony to be kept in their houses.

Paramahamsa Sri Bharadwaj Swamy, pontiff of Sri Yohamaya Bhuvaneswari Peetam, Ambattur, who performed puja to the hugely impressive idol of Lord Ganesh made with three lakh rudraksha seeds at Poompuhar Nagar in Kolathur, said Lord Ganesh or Pillaiyar, who is known by many names, is accessible to all devotees. “He is always at the place where there is love, affection and patience.

The Swamy advised “one should not harbour hatred but keep the mind calm. Anger will only cause destruction.”

V. Subramanian, secretary of Janakalyan, has displayed 27 different types of Ganesh idols including mud, clay, ceramic, navadhanyam, silver, mercury, panchaloha and granite.
