Chennai: Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday asked if the Union government would dissolve the DMK government to hold simultaneous Assembly elections with the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and alleged that ‘one nation, one elections’ is a conspiracy to bring a presidential type of government in the country.

“After ‘one nation, one election’ the BJP would move to ‘one nation, one president’. The country’s politics would become a one-man show”, he said, speaking at a marriage function.

Such a system of elections would make the functioning of parties like the DMK impossible, he said and added the AIADMK, too, could not function in such a system. The AIADMK is supporting the concept of ‘one nation, one election’ without knowing that it would be sacrificed at the altar.

The DMK had come to power only in 2021, he pointed out and asked if its government would be dissolved to facilitate simultaneous Assembly and parliament elections. “Will the state governments in Kerala, Karnataka and West Bengal be dissolved? If a government could not be formed in one state, what can be done? Will it be placed under President’s rule till the next parliament elections?”, Stalin asked.

Dismissing the BJP’s reasoning of reducing expenses to conduct elections, the DMK leader said the BJP should reduce plundering the public money to reduce the expenses. Alleging that the BJP government had committed irregularities to the tune of 7.5 lakh crores, Mr Stalin said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not answered the allegations made by the Comptroller and Auditor-General in its report.

He said a few persons who would listen to the BJP leaders had been appointed as members of the committee to consider ‘one nation one election'. Pointing out that the DMK is the third largest party in the Lok Sabha, he said no DMK members had been nominated to the committee.

The BJP government is convening a parliament session since it is afraid of the INDIA bloc meetings and the progress it is making, he added.

Earlier, in a letter published in party organ ‘Murasoli’, the DMK leader announced that the party would hold its state conference for the Mupperum Vizha (The birth anniversary of Dravidar Kazhagam founder E.V.R. Periyar, DMK founder C.N. Annadurai and the founding day of the DMK) at Vellore on September 15.

In the letter, he said the Union government had reduced gas cylinder prices as it is afraid of the INDIA bloc. Recalling the history of the DMK which was formed in 1949, the party has been fighting for the interests of the state for the last 75 years. The Vellore conference would pave the way for the party’s victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he asserted.
