CHENNAI: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) along with Greater Chennai Corporation have cleaned 11 major bus depots as a part of the dengue prevention drive which was kick-started on September 28, this year.

Chennai collector C. Anbuselvan had issued a notice to officials of MTC earlier to clear stagnant water and distribute Nilavembu Kudineer to all commuters.

“T. Nagar, KK Nagar, Vadapalani, Besant Nagar, Tollgate, Avadi, Perambur, JJ Nagar East, Iyyappanthangal, Mandaiveli and Thiruvanmiyur bus depots have been cleaned and the walls were whitewashed. Most of the washrooms in a pathetic condition earlier were also cleaned,” said an official of MTC.

About 500 student volunteers took part in the cleanliness drive and took an oath on maintaining cleanliness and preventing dengue.

Officials said about 50 litres of Nilavembu Kudineer was distributed in Mandaiveli, Ayyappanthangal and KK Nagar bus depots. Sources from state health department say the medicine would be distributed in all bus depots regularly.

Also, two to three dustbins have been placed in each bus depot.  “Though the bins are kept each year, they are either broken or stolen by miscreants as there are no security personnel deployed in the depot at night.  Even the tumblers for drinking water are stolen along with the metal chains,” rued one of the officials from the operations department at MTC.
