Karnataka: Act against vigilantes, orders DG&IGP
They have been directed to personally monitor such cases.
Bengaluru: DG&IGP Neelamani N. Raju issued a circular on Wednesday to all commissioners and district superintendents of police directing them to take action against those circulating messages that could trigger violence.
Following the lynching incidents, the Supreme Court on July 17 directed the central and state governments and Union Territories not to allow cow vigilantism or lynching by any group or mob and to prevent them from taking law into their hands. The police chief asked commissioners of police and SPs to file criminal cases against those circulating provocative messages, photos and videos on social media platforms.
The circular states that an FIR under section 153A of the IPC and/or other relevant provisions of the law will be registered against such people. It has also directed the nodal officers to constitute a special team to identify sensitive areas and to form a report on people who provoke violence by spreading fake news. They have been directed to personally monitor such cases.
