Hyderabad: In an alleged incident of drunk driving, an engineering student was killed and three others sustained injuries when the car in which they were travelling rammed into a stationary vehicle at Jubilee Hills in the wee hours of Sunday.  Drunk driving has claimed the lives of nine youngsters in less than a month in the city.

M. Sai Jatin Varma, who was sitting next to the driver, Sai Karthik, was killed on the spot as the car overturned multiple times after hitting a stationary car. The incident happened when the youngsters were returning home after attending a family function at a star hotel in Banjara Hills.

According to the police, Sai Jatin along with his friends Sai Karthik, Nikhil and Rohan, all residents of Gachibowli, had attended a family function and were returning in a car, owned by Jatin’s family. Karthik was driving the car. After they crossed the junction at Road No. 45 in Jubilee Hills, Karthik, who was driving at a high speed, did not notice a parked car on the left side of the road and rammed into it from behind. The car overturned multiple times and came to a halt at least fifty meters away from spot.

Sai Jatin Varma succumbed to injuries at a hospital, while Nikhil sustained minor injuries and two others escaped with bruises. K. Srinivas Rao, ACP Banjara Hills, said the accident occurred due to overspeeding.

“The blood samples of Karthik are sent for analysis. Based on the report, we will identify if he was drunk,” the ACP said. Earlier, six  youngsters were killed in two different accidents in Petbasheerabad. They were also under the influence of alcohol. On Thursday night, two boys were killed in an accident in Narsingi under the influence of alcohol.
