Hyderabad: Contrary to the general conception that the police does not impose penalties on traffic violators in the Old City, an RTI reply shows that the police has imposed a total of 14,45,162 traffic violation fines on commuters from April to October this year.
The data is contained in deputy commissioner of police, Traffic-I, Hyderabad, Babu Rao’s has reply to one Kareem Ansari of YouRTI.in.
According to the furnished information, in seven months, 10,81,316 notices were served for the payment of penalty dues. The police booked 2,189 cases against minors driving and 7,701 cases against drunk drivers. These figures show that police is not tolerating the traffic violators in the Old City.
Mr Ansari said the number of people booked for traffic violations has increased due to use of digital cameras by traffic cops. He said in the Old City, parents allow their minor children to use vehicles without driving licences. Minor boys use bikes for short distances.
The other most common traffic violation while driving in the Old City is using a mobile phone at the wheel. The difficulty of catching those who do this makes it difficult to prevent due to lack of manpower in the traffic police.
The police should focus on minors and drunk drive cases, which lead to major accidents on roads, said Mr Ansari.
