Chennai: A 64-year-old woman died on Thursday night of head injuries sustained a week back when her mentally retarded son pushed her against a wall following a verbal dispute.

The police said D. Darwin Manohar, 38, was admitted to a home for the retarded in Iyyappanthangal. Ever since Darwin’s father passed away a few years ago, his mother Thangamani Paul, 64, was staying with his sister and family at Yadava Street in Adambakkam.

"Darwin had come home to celebrate Christmas at their house. On December 29, when no one was at home, the mother and son got into a verbal argument which kept getting worse. Suddenly, Darwin pushed his mother against the wall," said a police officer.

When Darwin's younger sister Jeni returned, she noticed her mother lying unconscious and rushed her to the Rajiv Gandhi Government hospital. Adambakkam police registered a case and sent Darwin back to the home for the retarded in Iyyappanthangal. Thangamani succumbed to injuries on Thursday night.

Jeni, however, told the police that her mother's head injuries were minor and that she had died because of a liver failure. The police said they can tell cause of death only after a post-mortem. Investigations are on.
