More than 2,000 electrical appliances meant for welfare distribution under government schemes got gutted in a fire on Tuesday.

Chennai: In the third such incident in five months in Tambaram municipality, more than 2,000 electrical appliances meant for welfare distribution under government schemes got gutted in a fire on Tuesday.

Police sources said that about 2,000 electrical fans, mixers and grinders were stored in the Government higher secondary school building in Selaiyur.

On Sunday evening a fire broke out in the room where the appliances were stored, police said.

By the time, fire personnel reached the area and put out the fire, all appliances were gutted, police said.

Since it was a Sunday and there were no students in school, a bigger mishap was averted, police said. It is to be noted that in a similar incident reported in May last year, over 4,000 appliances meant for welfare got gutted in the store room in the campus of the same school. Further investigations are on.
