Saradha scam: CBI says it carried out Supreme Court directives
Some of the CBI officers including lady officers were manhandled by the local police.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday while agreeing to hear on Tuesday the CBI’s application orally observed that it would “come down heavily” on the Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar if there are materials to show that he was destroying electronic evidence in the Saradha scam probe.
CJI Gogoi, while agreeing to hear the case on Tuesday, gave liberty to any person who can bring proof regarding the allegation of destruction of evidence. The SG said “We issued four summons to the police commissioner who is a potential accused, he didn’t respond. We intimated the Director General of Police that your officer is not cooperating. Thereafter our team went. Our team was arrested and kept in police station. FIRs are being registered against CBI officers.”
The CBI in its application pleaded that it was only carrying the Supreme Court directive to probe the Saradha and other related chit funds scandal in the state pursuant to the top court’s directive of May 9, 2014.
Tracing the sequence of events, the CBI said unprecedented developments unfolded in Bengal on Sunday night when the CBI officers sought to question the commissioner.
It said, “The flagrant and shameless defiance of Constitution was on full display in media who were showing this undemocratic hooliganism live. Some of the CBI officers including lady officers were manhandled by the local police.”
