Hyderabad: Legal hurdles are slowing down the progress of two-bedroom housing scheme works in Silver Compound (Rasoolpura) and Old Maredpally within the SCB limits.

The government had shortlisted 1.3 acres in Silver Compound and nearly 5 acres in Old Marredpally for constructing two-bedroom flats. After a series of meetings over several months, the revenue department could get the consent of more than 80 per cent of locals. The rest proved to be more adamant about the matter, and demanded more number of flats for vacating an area of 50 square yards or more.

In the case of Silver Compound, most of the locals were staying in 30 square yard huts. The yardstick followed by officials in choosing beneficiaries was not to the liking of nearly 15 families staying in houses of 50 to 70 square yards.

“They are building only 176 flats while the beneficiary list shows the total figure as 253. We raised objections in the court addressing the question of allocation of houses considering the disparity in figures. We want to know who will be accommodated in the new houses and who will be left stranded. The court had issued a stay and directed them not to touch our houses until case was over,” said T. Nagender and Mohammed Fakruddin, who belong to families opposing the housing scheme.
