THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The UDF spirits have soared sky-high with the massive turnout witnessed in Wayanad where Congress president Rahul Gandhi along with AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi received a tumultuous welcome on Thursday. The UDF believes that Wayanad will have its ripple effect helping it to sweep the Lok Sabha polls in the state.

The KPCC leadership was, in fact, bowled over by the enthusiasm shown by the supporters as it was not sure of the response from the partymen and the Muslim League. The Wayanad DCC had not asked the party workers to converge at the mega road show which stretched over two km. A senior Congress leader told DC the duo and the SPG were caught unawares by the massive crowd gathered there.

“They never had witnessed such mass mobilisation in Uttar Pradesh. The Wayanad show was unprecedented and people flocked to the place in a festive mood,” he said.

Initially, opposition leader Ramesh Chenni-thala and IUML general secretary P. K. Kunhali-kutty were in the front of the open vehicle. Mr Gandhi who noticed Mr Oommen Chandy was in the rear ushered him to the front. “When Mr Chandy and Mr Chennithala have been attacking the CPM, Rahul showed the decorum to spare it. He will target the BJP government at the centre and the political violence of the LDF without naming CPM,” he said.
