Days after LS loss, Congress wins Shikaripura TMC
The Congress also won seven seats in the 17-member Shiralakoppa Town Panchayat and JD(S), three.
Shivamogga: Just days after the BJP won from Shivamogga in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Congress has won the Shikaripura Town Municipal Council (TMC) in the district, embarrassing state BJP chief B.S. Yeddyurappa, who represents Shikaripura in the assembly.
Mr Yeddyurappa's son, B.Y. Raghavendra won from Shivamogga by a huge margin of votes against Mr Madhu Bangarappa of the JD(S) in the recent LS poll. But the results of the elections to the Shikaripura Town Municipal Council announced here on Monday, saw the BJP win eight seats as against 12 by the Congress, and three by independents. With JD(S) losing all seats it contested, the Congress is all set to take control of Shikaripura TMC.
The Congress also won seven seats in the 17-member Shiralakoppa Town Panchayat and JD(S), three. The BJP managed to win just two seats and independents, five. Given the results, the JD(S) is likely to form an alliance with the Congress to take over the reins of this town panchayat. It was a BJP show, however, in Sagara CMC where it won 16 seats, followed by the Congress, which bagged nine and JD(S), which won just one seat. Independents bagged five.
The saffron party did well in the 12-member Soraba Town Panchayat too, winning six seats, as against four by the Congress, one by the JD(S) and one by an independent. The BJP could take its tally to eight with the help of its incumbent MLA and MP, to take control of this town panchayat.
In Hosanagar Town Panchayat, it was a hung verdict with the BJP and Congress winning four seats each and the JD(S), three. The coalition partners are likely to form an alliance in the panchayat.
