Renovate over 39,000 rivers in Tamil Nadu: MDMK

CHENNAI: MDMK will hold a rally towards the Secretariat demanding total renovation of lakes, ponds and canals in the state and stopping of sewage and industrial waste into the water bodies.

A resolution passed at the party's youth wing meeting on Friday said while fighting for the state's rights should preserve the lakes, ponds and canals in the state. There are 39,202 lakes and ponds in the state with a total capacity of 347 tmc and they should be fully renovated in the next five years, it said.

The party also wanted to expedite the linking of rivers in Tamil Nadu and the linking of Pandiaru-Punnampuzha and Anaimalaiyaru-Nallaru rivers should be taken up in the first phase.

The livelihood of the state could be saved by protecting the Western Ghats, the resolution said and asked the government to announce a separate plan to preserve the Western Ghats. A campaign to save the water bodies would be taken up and a rally would towards the Secretariat would be held after that to press for the demands.
