Supreme Court notice to Andhra Pradesh on Polavaram project
The court also framed issues for adjudication in the suit filed by the Orissa government in 2007 against the project.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Andhra Pradesh government from Orissa government seeking stay of all construction activities in the Indira Sagar Polavaram project and for quashing the final approval granted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests
A two-member bench comprising Justices Madan B. Lokur and Deepak Gupta issued the notice and posted the matter for further hearing on September 6. The court had earlier sent notice to AP on a writ petition filed by advocate Saravan Kumar on behalf of RELA, NGO. The court also framed issues for adjudication in the suit filed by the Orissa government in 2007 against the project.
The petitioner RELA said, in the case of Polavaram Project, the statuary provisions of The Scheduled Tribes and Other Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act 2006, The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2013, Environment (Protection) Act 1986, The Forest (Conservation) Act 1980 are blatantly and continuously violated by Polavaram Project Authority under Union Water Resource Ministry and the other Ministries.
