Hyderabad: Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya on Saturday unveiled a statue of the late former Union minister Dr Mallikarjun on his 82th birth anniversary, and said he had played a pivotal role in the Telangana moment, right from his days as a student at Osmania University.

Dattatreya, speaking at the event at Gachibowli, said that Mallikarjun had joined prominent leaders Marri Chenna Reddy, G. Venkatswamy and others to intensify the demand and laid the foundation for achieving Telangana statehood.

Mallikarjun had quit the Medak Lok Sabha seat for then former prime minister Indira Gandhi to contest; her victor from there was instrumental in her becoming Prime Minister, Dattatreya noted. Mallikarjun was an intellectual and served the country under then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao as defence, railway minister and parliamentary affairs ministers.
