Hyderabad: The committee constituted by the GHMC to probe the recent under-construction building collapses in the city has submitted its preliminary report to the civic body with a few recommendations.

Following recent incidents of buildings collapsing during construction at Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Maheswari Vidyalaya’s building, Film Nagar Cultural Club, Vasanth Nagar and others, the GHMC had constituted the committee with the R&B chief engineer, the GHMC chief engineer, director for National Academy of Construction, JNTU professor Dr N.V. Ramana Rao and chief city planner to recommend actions to prevent similar incidents in future.

The committee has observed that the main causes of formwork and scaffolding failure are improper stripping and shore removal, inadequate bracing, vibration, unstable foundations under supports, poor maintenance of plumb and inadequate control of concrete placement including lack of attention to formwork details.

The committee has made seven recommendations for builders, architects, structural engineers and contractors including site engineers and supervisors.

The committee, which was constituted on five major aspects, will submit its final report within four weeks. It will discuss with professional bodies like Institute of Engineers, Institute of Architects, Association of Structural Engineers and other experts.
