Certify me as Jayalalithaa's legal heir, says nephew Deepak Jayakumar
Deepak and Deepa, son and daughter of Jayalalithaa's only brother Jayakumar, are the only surviving members of the family.
CHENNAI: Deepak Jayakumar, the nephew of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa who approached the Guindy taluk office on Wednesday for certifying him as her legal heir, was asked to approach the courts since it was a “complicated issue.”
Deepak, who performed last rites of Jayalalithaa along with Sasikala, approached the Guindy Tashildar on Wednesday for certifying him as the legal heir of the late leader since he is her brother’s son. Deepak and Deepa, son and daughter of Jayalalithaa’s only brother Jayakumar, are the only surviving members of the family.
Deepak’s application seeking legal heir certificate assumes significance since he along with his sister has been claiming stake for the Poes Garden bungalow owned by their aunt Jayalalithaa. When the government announced that the bungalow would be converted into a memorial for Jayalalithaa, the siblings had opposed the move saying they should have been consulted once.
“Deepak approached the taluk office seeking legal heir certificate. Since it is a complicated matter, we advised him to approach courts for the certificate,” a source in the taluk office said. If the government stands by its statement of compensating the owners of the Poes Garden bungalow, Deepak and Deepa would benefit. However, the siblings are not in the best of their relations.
