Curious onlookers see water spouting from an old pipeline at Uppal, near the venue of a function to inaugurate a new project, in Hyderabad on Friday.

Hyderabad: It was an inauguration with a splash at Uppal Hills, Kurmanagar where a pending water pipeline project of the Metro Water board was scheduled for inauguration on Friday.

Within a few minutes of the inauguration, an adjacent old pipeline, which is connected to the new network, burst, splashing all those who attended the inauguration.  The ceremony was held at 1.30 pm and 15 minutes later the pipeline burst.

Uppal MLA N.V.S.S. Prabhakar said, “The laying of the pipeline network which would connect 500 connections had been delayed by two-and-a-half years. The project worth '2 crore was carried out to improve the supply facility at Uppal Hills area. On Friday, the project was scheduled for inauguration, but within a few minutes of the water being released, an old connecting line burst.”

Transport minister P. Mahender Reddy, Malkajgiri MP Ch. Malla Reddy, Mr Prabhakar and corporators were present. An official of the board’s operation and maintenance wing said, “The old pipeline was connected to the new network. Since the size of the old line was smaller than the new line, the pipeline burst due to high pressure. The leak was arrested by stopping the supply.”
