Telangana State Medical Council bars 5 doctors
Dr Bhushan had conducted a limb strengthening and reconstruction surgery on Mr Nikhil Reddy in April.
Hyderabad: In a landmark decision, the Telangana State Medical Council has suspended Dr Chandra Bhushan, orthopaedic surgeon at Global Hospitals, for two years for “ethical infringement” as he performed a surgery to increase the height of Mr Nikhil Reddy, and six other doctors.
Dr Bhushan had conducted a limb strengthening and reconstruction surgery on Mr Nikhil Reddy in April. He did not recover.
In another major decision, Dr Namratha of the Srushti Test Tube Baby Centre in KPHB was suspended for five years and banned for life from conducting surrogacies.
An NRI couple from the US with healthy sperm and ovum had applied for having a baby through surrogacy with Srushti Test Tube Centre after which a woman from Visakhapatnam was designated as the surrogate mother. She delivered a baby which was handed over to the NRI couple. When the couple applied for a US passport for the baby, the authorities did a DNA test and found that it did not match with the parents.
Following this, the parents approached various legal avenues seeking justice, but could not take the baby with them to the US.
Regarding the suspension of Dr Bhushan, Medical Council chairman Dr E. Ravindra Reddy said, “He was doing the operation for the first time. It is an experimental surgery. How could he do it on a young unmarried person without informing or consulting the parents? What if something had gone wrong? There is also no video or documentary evidence to say that the doctor explained everything to the patient before surgery. He should have at least taken help from some surgeon who had already done the surgery successfully."
Council bars 3 doctors for ‘unethical psychiatry’
The Medical Council also suspended three doctors for six months for practicing unethical psychiatry practices.
The doctors are Dr Rahul Carter of Serenity Foundation, Dr Harri Kumar Ravva of Mind Crest Hospital of Psychiatry and Rehabilitation and Dr Minhaj Zafar Nasirabadi of Samantha Rehabilitation Centre.
Dr T. Manoj Kumar of Jagtial, Karimnagar was suspended for three months for conducting indiscriminate appendectomy surgeries and seven others were warned against their unethical practices.
Dr Krishna Kanth Reddy has been suspended for failing to comply with orders and not displaying his MBBS degree. Two quacks, K. Swamy and D. Rajesh, have been recommended to the police by the council for taking legal action.
