Oppn says Pinarayi using Shah’s UAPA amendment
The Congress leader said he was at a loss to understand how the case which has already come up before the court could be reviewed by the government.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former home minister Thiruvanchoor Radha-krishnan on Monday accused chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan of employing Amit Shah’s amendment to slap UAPA cases against two DYFI workers.
Thiruvanchroor, who moved the notice for adjournment motion in the Assembly, said the LDF government was using the draconian law against its own DYFI members. The Congress leader said he was at a loss to understand how the case which has already come up before the court could be reviewed by the government.
As per the amended UAPA, the police had the powers to brand anyone a terrorist. Referring to the chief minister’s assurance that the government would examine the case against the youths, he sought to know as to how the goverment can examine whether the case would stand legal scrutiny at this stage.
On the killings of Maoists, Thiruvanchoor said that after this government came to power, this was the third incident. Two were killed in Nilambur forest, C.P. Jaleel in Vythiri and now four in Attapady.
The Congress leader said Manivasakam who was not even in a position to walk, had come to surrender, as per the media reports and findings of delegations that had visited the spot. As many as 30 rounds of gun shots were fired.
Shivani who had participated in mediatory talks, had earlier informed that discussions had taken place with police to facilitate the surrender. They were ready to come before law. Instead of taking them into custody, they were gunned down.
Thiruvanchoor said even the CPI delegation led by assistant secretary Prakash Babu which visited the spot, had alleged that fake evidence had been created. However, despite the CPI raising such grave allegations the government has not taken action against any police officer. The government cannot shy away from its responsibility.
The Congress leader said four members of CPI are part of Pinarayi Vijayan Cabinet and the party has serious differences over the Maoist issue. This clearly indicated that the Cabinet lacked collective functioning and responsibility.
He said the CPI leader had himself pointed out that the video circulated by the police was fake .
