Durgam Cheruvu is dump ground for construction waste of cable bridge
It has become a cause for concern with mud from the construction being dumped into the lake.
HYDERABAD: The first cable-stayed bridge in South India, which is being constructed on the Durgam Cheruvu by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in association with Larsen & Turbo (L&T), has become a cause for concern with mud from the construction being dumped into the lake, resulting in encroachment.
Last week, the mandal revenue officer and other officials arrived at the spot to stop the contractor from dumping sand and construction material into the lake.
Serilingampally tahsildar S. Tirupati Rao said, “They started dumping in the lake last week. We alerted the irrigation team and the police. Now the dumping has been stopped.” GHMC officials said that the contractor had requested permission to dump the material. “A casting yard has been constructed to set up a pillar, for which a certain part of the lake is being used. We have taken permission from the tourism department, under whose jurisdiction the area falls. The mud will be removed from the location after the work is completed,” said a GHMC official.
A bund has also been created near the site of construction of the pillar. The stones are expected to be removed once the construction is completed. The GHMC official said that there had been confusion caused by miscommunication. He added that the police complaint had been withdrawn. According to the officials, the mud and rubble being dumped into the lake will be removed after completion of the construction work.
Mr Tirupati Rao said, “Once an agreement is in place, the contracting firm can proceed with its activity.” The bridge, which will run from Jubilee Hills to Madhapur, across the Durgam Cheruvu, is being constructed to ease traffic congestion, keeping the city’s future needs in mind.”
