THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Malayalam feature film, Run Kalyani entirely shot in the capital city by a woman film maker is having its preview at Soorya Krishnamurthy's Ganesham on Saturday at 11 am. The debut feature fiction has been written and directed by J. Geetha which says about a young cook, Kalyani who lives in an agraharam in Thiruvananthapuram.

Journalist turned writer /director/producer, Geetha who currently lives in Brighton in UK portrays about the duties, dreams and desires of Kalyani. Being a young cook, Kalyani's days are the same as she doubles as a caretaker to her ailing aunt. Geetha says that the 100 minute film  depicts the intense crescendo of grief and grit, sorrow and strength which had been portrayed by newcomer, Garggi Ananthan. Geetha, a Thiruvananthapuram-born film maker who had won several international awards at film festivals for her documentaries is a tad bit disappointed that her Run Kalyani was not selected for the 24th IFFK which will begin on Friday. But it went on to win the special jury award at Kolkata International Film Festival last month which saw Geetha receiving the award from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee in the presence of chief guest and Shabana Azmi.

“It is surprising that not a single film made by women film makers have found space under Malayalam Cinema Today category. It is high time the Chalachitra Academy becomes self critical,” Geetha told DC.

The rejection of several critically-acclaimed films by IFFK 2019 had snowballed in to a major controversy where a slew of filmmakers had approached the High Court for its intervention. Geetha is looking for prospective distributors to showcase her Run Kalyani in theatres across the state. Her husband, Ian Mcdonald is the co-producer.
