KRISHNAGIRI: A shocking case of a wife of a social worker throwing her three-day-old girl baby into a lake in a bid to kill her in Krishnagiri district was miraculously halted, thanks to the timely intervention of the local people who saved the girl child from meeting a watery grave.

On Thursday, the local people who were working at the place close to the Pattalamman lake, opposite to the Denkannikottai government hospital, noticed a woman sitting on the lake bund with a newborn baby.

To their shock, the woman was seen throwing the baby into the lake water and quietly moved away from the place.

However, prompt intervention of onlookers saved the baby.

The girl child is now out of danger and under the care of the Denakannikottai government hospital.

The woman when questioned by the police gave her name as 26-year-old Manjula, wife of 30-year-old N.Manjunath, a social worker of Anthevanapalli village in Denkanikottai.

Manjula who already has two girl children was upset because of the third child also being a girl, said sources.

On being discharged from the Denkannikottai government hospital, she went to the lake with the baby and threw the child into the water.

The Denkannikottai police registered a case and conduct investigation to probe whether Manjula had committed such a crime in the past.
