Bengaluru: Over 5,000 went missing last year, 4,900 traced, says CCRB
Number of women missing goes up by 500 from 2016 to 2017.
Bengaluru: 5,128 people went missing in 2017 at an average of 14 per day, reveals the Central Crime Record Bureau (CCRB) statistics. Of those missing, 4,941 were traced, while 187 are still untraceable. At least 427 missing complaints are registered every month, while 15 are never traced.
In 2016, 5,095 missing cases were filed and 4,500 people were traced, while 595 are still missing. Nearly 750 people are still untraceable over the last two years.
Additional Commissioner of Police (East) Seemanth Kumar Singh said that in most cases, people would have eloped and cases would have remained unclosed or police records would not have been updated.
In 2016, 2,946 women went missing, while 2,700 were traced. In 2017, the numbers went up to 3,441 in 2017, while 3,028 were traced. Of the 1,068 cases of kidnapping cases reported in 2017, 893 were women and children.
DCP (Crime 2) Jinendra Kanagavi said that the police are spreading awareness in the city, especially in schools asking children to be alert.
The city police detected 177 cases of human trafficking in 2016, while the numbers came down to 116 in 2017. The number of rescued people too has gone down from 454 women and 145 men in 2016 to 328 women and 128 men in 2017.
Mr Seemanth Kumar Singh said that the numbers are going down because of the strict implementation of rules and regulations.
An activist, Anita Kanaiya, CEO, Freedom Project India, said that there is an increase in the number of people going missing, especially children, but most of them are not being traced.
