Hyderabad: Pharmacists on Monday called for creating a cadre of clinical pharmacists and drug information specialists in government and private hospitals of Telangana.

Members of the Pharmacy Association made this demand during a meet with health minister Dr Laxma Reddy.

More than 100 pharmacists met the minister and said these positions had to be created to ensure proper disbursal of required medicines and also promotion of generic ones in the market. Pharmacists were carrying out immunisation programmes in the West and if given the responsibility here, a lot of burden could be shared, they added.

The minister said discussions would be held with the health secretary after which pharmacists would be apprised.

Pharmacists have been demanding a position in the government and private sector for quite a long time. There were more than 5,000 pharma graduates in the state.
