Belagavi: The arrest of a city corporator, Dr Dinesh Nashipudi, for allegedly kidnapping a teenage girl in Belagavi has taken a new twist with several leaders and residents of his ward staging a protest in his support.

The protesters gathered in large numbers at DC’s office in Belagavi and accused two women leaders of hatching a conspiracy to trap Dr Nashipudi.

Two days ago, the corporator was arrested by the police for kidnapping a girl and forcibly keeping her in a house. The protesters alleged that women leaders, Trupti Pattankudi and Akhila Pathan had levelled false allegations against the corporator and got a case filed with the police. The coporator’s supporters wanted the police to arrest the two women to unearth the truth.

They said the corporator was never involved in any criminal activity and always came to people’s help at his ward. They urged local authorities to obtain information about the two women, who supported the girl's family to register the case.

A case should be filed against the two women and stringent action be taken against them. A government employee had lodged a case with Belagavi police alleging that the corporator had kidnapped her daughter. Later, the police arrested the corporator and produced him before a local court.
